I express different of those aspects inside or outside various communities. despite our tendency as human beings to "attach" ourselves to mental concepts and artifacts that allow us to create a more tangible identity for ourselves... sufism existed before islam [and thereby sharia] and will continue to exist, independent of islam or any tradition. traditions are made by human beings and are only as relevant, in terms of spiritual growth and development, as the individuals maintaining the tradition. if we use the islamic nations as an example we can clearly identify a stagnation, as a result of tradition not being flexible and developing along with time and circumstances. islamic sharia is notorious for it's subjugation of women, and yet some of the greatest sufis have been women. is this a result of them following sharia. hallaj was put to death by those who followed sharia. this is not to say there is no basis for the sharia, or that one should not follow it... it is to say that traditions are artificial entities, the individuals who follow the tradition become the spirit of the tradition and it takes a whole lot more than rules, regulations, ritual, and recitation to cultivate one's spirit. practice makes perfect... and what works for me may not work for you, that's why the first divinity is one's inner divinity. reflecting upon your nature, so that you may begin to tap into the Absolute nature of your "being". what is it we seek to become? when we achieve this will we be different beings than we already are? sufism brings you home... to your essential nature and being, that "being" is not a product of tradition or practice... it is a manifestation of the Absolute... "Being", your practice... is a knock on the door of your... reality traditions are maps to your essential nature... they are by no means that said nature. while we discuss the map, we lose sight of the experience.
