In 1999–2002, the combined prevalence and the prevalence of obesity among non-Hispanic Black women was 20 percentage points higher than among White women (77.2 percent vs. 57.2 percent, and 49.0 percent vs. 30.7 percent, respectively). Table 1 shows in detail how ethnic groups were defined in the analysis. Assimilationism can therefore be understood as a cultural nationalism which had the consequence of freeing Australia from colonial shackles and, in the end, forcing it to distinguish itself from British racial/cultural identity. The principles of social cohesion are easiest to determine when all citizens share the same values and standards, but far harder to identify when individuals interpret 'cohesion' and 'disorder' in different ways.
