Cambridge School (1920s–1930s): A group of scholars at Cambridge University who rejected historical and biographical analysis of texts in favor of close readings of the texts themselves. After taking introductory courses in both areas, students take advanced courses in two major tracks—early modern art and modern/contemporary art. Formalistic critics spend a great deal of time analyzing irony, paradox, imagery, and metaphor. This form-critical "history of imaginary events and invented sayings" has no justification in historical science, defined as "the knowledge of the real past as such."
